your father is doing a great service to his health by excersing on a regular basis. It is absolutley important to exercise and stay in shape especially when you get older. Your body slows down and the older you are the harder it is to recover from being sick. I don't think he will be getting any pain unless he over does it in the gym with weights and what not and also depends on how long he exercises. Exercising for too long can have negative effects on your body.

regular exercise helps to strengthen your bones and builds muscle that helps to support the bone. As long as he isn't doing crazy amounts of exercise he should be fine. I see people right into their sixties at the gym all the time.
