Open Source software is made by developers who like to make software available to everyone, not just those who can afford it.
With most Open Source software programs, all they require is a donation to help them with the development. So if you like a certain program that is Open Source, make a donation, or spread the news about how much you like it.

The Free Open Source Software development projects now numbering 134,320 at http://sourceforge.net are supported by their corporate users, plus, your donations, and, some Univerisities that have the huge funding from grants, for development of software.
BSD was initially released from the BerkeleyUC labs in 1984.
You are using FreeBSD right now, Yahoo.com runs it on all servers and systems... Plus, you came here through 8 to 20 other Linux or BSD servors. The Internet is 78% Unix and Unix clones.
Microsoft.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com all run on 45,000 Linux systems. The software is FREE, so most of the Fortune 1,000 take the FREE RIDE, and pass the savings on to the share holders/owners.
The 800+ FREE Unix clones are FREE. http://distrowatch.com and http://livecdlist.com host 500 and 310 respectively.
I prefer http://pclinuxos.com for all the great FREE stuff. It is a LiveCD that runs in CD, loads in RAM disc. Installs in about 25 minutes. Contains 5500 free games, and applications, suites, programs, browsers, p2p, servers, sniffers...
