One cannot really pinpoint how to respond to insults in a general form. It depends on the insult and who is insulting. You allow insults to really get to you depending on the person who is attempting to insult. For example, if a total stranger who is drunk says something insulting, why would you let the opinion of that person hurt you? Who cares what a total stranger attempts to know about you. The insult is an irresponsible remark since the person does not have all the facts to form a rational opinion about you. Only insults from sane and intelligent people that truly know you should bother you, because then there is a reason to be worried about; maybe what they are saying is true because they already know how you are. But if a total stranger attempts to insult, just walk away. It is pointless to start an argument with a person who you don't even know. The insult is their own very irresponsible personal opinion and just that. Hey, maybe you could just respond exactly: "that is your very own irresponsible personal opinion and nothing more." And then walk away. The ball will then just stay in their court and you will have avoided an unnecessary confrontation.

I try to walk away and be the bigger person unless I can come up with a retort that I won't regret later.
My aunt suggested I tell people "May the bird of Paradise fly up your nose" when I was being teased at school. She said it was the best type of insult because people didn't know if they were being insulted or not. I tried it one day and everyone just looked at me like I was insane, but they did stop speaking to me, so I guess it kinda worked.

Do not dignify an insult with a response. Indifference can be so much more painful than direct assaults. If you react, the insulter wins.

Can't insult me unless I allow it to make me feel insulted But it reqally depends on how they say it and the words they choose-if vulgar or disrespectful inform them not to address me in that manner. I also inform that i know myself pretty well and am very comfortable with myself and their words simply do not interest me

Well, generally I'll just say something like "I love you too sport," and walk away. However, that's when I'm in a good mood. For a bit of interesting fluster on their faces, say something like "You left the price tag on your dress/shoes/shirt/jeans", then raise your eyebrows and smirk at them. All very childish stuff, but enormously satisfying when their hand instinctively lifts to find the tag.

By not caring enough to insult them back. Treating someone like they're not even worth it hurts more.

I don't usually go for the 'tit for tat' when tête à tête. I'll shame them with my command of English without resorting to baser reparte UNLESS it simply cannot be avoided. I got past my need to insult casually when I left the service -- but it did take a while.

Just say ok and smile. The smile is what gets people. When they're all mad and you smile, it's a worse insult than words can provide.

By pointing out how rude they were. The best response (especially in front of others) is "What would make you say a thing like that?"

It really puts them on the spot and makes them accountable for their remarks.
