You can get your learners permit at 15 and drivers license at 16 In NE. I don't know what the laws are in IL. If you do take a drivers course it does lower you insurance cost.

If you wait until your 18, the minimum requirements for a driver's license decrease. You will just need to have a permit and pass a driving test at the secretary of state's office.
At 16 and 17, you need to pass a driver's education class, have a permit, pass a driving test, and have now 50 hours of learning experience to obtain a license.
Get your permit now, get experience, and when you turn 18, get your license.

I don't know IL laws but I am pretty much 100% sure they will not just give you a license! In Michigan they will give you a permit type thing and you drive with someone else for like 90 days and then take a road test to get your license. The class is not necessary at your age but the road test and driving under supervision is. And I would imagine it's like that in IL. At least I hope so because just giving someone a license would be horribly dangerous.

This is the Illinois site for license questions:
http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/drivers/programs/gdl.html#initial
I just read that drivers 16-17 must have completed a driver's ed course. It looks to me as if you can skip the course once you're 18.

just checked the DMV site..you can get a permit now but you can't drive until you are 18 yrs old.....because they won't give you the driver test until then..so you don't need to go to drivers education class........hope this helps you bud.... ;)
