why do so many people perm?

I perm my hair for two reasons.
1) My own curls are so unmanageable that the only way to control them (and get some semblance of style out of them) is to perm them.
2) Perming my hair makes it grow faster. When my hair is permed it grows an inch a month. When I don't have my hair permed it grows a 1/2 inch a month.
Addendum: Koko Butta, that may be the case with your hair. But I assure you that my hair is not damaged from perming, and it really does grow much faster. We are all individuals. Maybe you should realize that what happens to one doesn't necessarily happen to all.

Cos' Perming hair can make someone look more matured or even sexy... But frankly straight hair will be e best to maintain. If u want a perm , i rather u get a temporary 1. 1st it would harm ur hair, secondly, it's turn out nicer cos' perming usually turn out betta aft few wash. Trust me, I have tasted it myself. That's why my hair cant grow longer over my waist. Aft perm dry & damaged, gto cut & cut... Really Sad... sobbb

japanese perm is popular, since i think most people like silky, smooth, straight hair. i got a japanese perm. i just dont like the one where it does the exact opposite of a japanese perm.

Relaxers are popular because we are influenced by the media and many in the black community that believe straight hair is more desirable than kinky hair.

now days i don't think perms are popular. natural is in. if you hair is straight or curly, it doesn't matter. perms are hard on your hair.

susie q, your hair doesn't grow faster when you perm, curly hair just appears shorter than straight hair. Perms don't make your hair grown faster, they damage it.

Because all you see on T.V. is beautiful long straight hair. As women we think long straight hair is beautiful and the only way to attract male attention.

Like a hair straightener? I think it's cause everyone wants that classical 'white' look. I don't know why. I love my hair natural.
