You can buy a few Kong toys, they are made of hard rubber but have a hole in the middle. (hollow) they are great chew toys. But what I do is, the night before I fill the hole with canned dog food then put it in the freezer. Then give each of my dogs one when I leave. They work on them for hours! it keeps them busy, and it doesn't cost a lot. good luck!

Stuff the hollow center of a Kong or a big marrow bone with peanut butter or squeeze cheese (even smushed up bread will do). That's worth hours of time licking the last smidgen out. There are also various treat dispensers that leave a trail of goodies when rolled around, and even a automated timer that will spit out stuffed kongs or other toys at intervals all day. Remember to allow for the extra food figuring meals.

In my past, I have had a dog named Tiffany who lived to be 22 years old, she didn't like to be left alone and got her feelings hurt when I did. I have read that if you leave the TV or a radio on they won't miss you as much. They feel that there are people there so it takes some of the loneliness away for them, there for not so bored and wanting to eat things up.I always did this when I left for work, was gone sometimes up to 10 hr shifts. She really seemed to enjoy her alone time with our TV.
Good luck

Give your dog an old article of your clothing that you have worn but not washed for him or her to lay on. This will help keep the dog happy during the day. After all you are the most important thing in your dogs life.

Kongs work really well. I fill mine with peanut butter and freeze it and it keeps my pups busy for hours. Plus, there are other treat balls for smart dogs to work at and get the treats out. Another trick is to hide treats around the house or yard where the dog will be and have him search for them while you are gone.

If there's a doggy daycare in your area, that's the best. They spend the day socializing with other dogs and are usually well looked after.
Some doggy daycares have webcams so you can check up on your dog at work (if you have a computer).
