In my knowledge, you can not install windows once you install linux. Because windows will always take the first partition and will create a boo loader which will not show any linux option. So if you install linux and then install windows, you can only use windows and not linux.
But if you install windows first, you can anytime, install llinux on your system, by creating a different partition. Linux ask for partition at the installation. You can tweak those settings as per your choice. Also linux will understand you already have windows installed. So after installing linux, at the boot time, it will ask whether you want to go to linux or windows. These systems are claeed dual bootable, as you can boot to different OS. If you want to switch OS, you must reboot the PC and choose other OS.
Nowdays there are also solutions with which you can switch the OS without booting it. This is called virtualisation. On the same system at same time you can work on windows and linux. Give it a try.

Yes, but which flavor of linux? There are hundreds of choices. If you just want to try it without actually wiping a machine clean and installing it, search for a linux distibution (distro in the vernacular) called Knoppix. It is a bootable CD that runs entirely in memory, without messing up your existing Windows installation.

Yes you can download all distributions of linux free. The problem is choosing which one is good for you. My suggestion is to go to the following website and take their test/questionaire. http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/index.php?firsttime=true
This will help you choose a suitable distribution and as well give you links at the end to download and view the distributions' websites.

There are several "distributions" of Linux that are free. RedHat Linux is a popular one that is available at redhat.com (fedora is the free one). Other distributions include but are not limited to: Mandrake, Debian and Slackware.

No, Microsoft bought all 800 Distros, last week!
Didn't you hear? (Just joking! Oracle is buying up Red Hat; Novell has Suse, Mandriva, Conectiva, Ximian!)
They missed this one, it is what they run on their 45,000 Hotmail.com, MSN.com, and Microsoft.com servers...
http://pclinuxos.com includes 5500 games, applications...
My Third grade class takes it home to install on the family computers. It runs upto 50X faster, now, than Windos ever did.
Also, it lets you multi-boot as many OSes as there are alpha letters left in your computer... Directions on the website!
Also, easy instructions on the desktop...
Daddy is glad, he says I are smart, and he can spend that money we were saving to 'upgrade' on more beer...
