It just doesn't make the news, I worked Downtown Chicago for 6 years and they have signs on buildings advising to be carefull of falling ice cycles. I worked in the Sears Tower on the 38 floor and you can see the ice cycles falling. So it does happen.

All the asphalt makes it hard for icicles big enough to kill you to form. The asphalt holds in heat. Also for something to be news worthy, it needs to be rare and shocking. So for that to make the news it would have to be a once in a long time event. (Well, if people are interested in, like the war, it will be on even tho it is common)
