You may or may not get any information beyond the fact that he was arrested for grand theft from the arresting agency. The reason for that is that if there was a warrant issued for his arrest from some other agency, maybe even in another town or state, the agency that arrested would not have any details of the crime he allegedly commited other than what is says on the warrant--Grand Theft.
But, by all means, call the arresting agency. If he was arrested during the commission of the crime and not on a warrant, then they should have the details. They may not tell you much if there is an ongoing investigation and because the case has not gone to court.
You could also try the District Attorney's Office, but again, they may not give you many details because the case is pending.
Your brother-in-law should have an attorney assigned to him at his arraignment. Find out who that is and talk to him. That would probably be your best source to actually find out any specific information.

The Clerk of the District Court's office should have all the information that is currently available on the case. Got the county courthouse in Cleveland NC and ask for the records. Just make sure they are for the current case, since he has previous convictions. If they don't have anything yet, make sure that the office would handle the paperwork and check back in a few days.

The paperwork filed in the Clerk of the District Court's office is public record and should be accessable.

From the way you phrase your request, it seems to me that you are some distance from where he was arrested. Perhaps you can find an "online" Newspaper from the region where he was arrested.

Another thing you can do is to call the Police Department that arrested him and, because you are family, ask for some details as to his arrest, bail, does he have a lawyer...etc....

call the arresting agency ,if they have a booking department ask them if he is in custody, what for and amout of bond. this is all public info ,if they wont give it to you then I guess you could ask for a police report but you shouldnt have to.when you ask about his custody they can tell you when he has a court date or trial or whatever and you could just write to him and ask him.they can also give you the address. More than likely it will not show up on their website, they wouldnt put every arrest in there and probably wouldnt update it this soon.

Go to the police or sheriff station who arrested him and get a police report. they are public record. You will likely have to pay for it, and you may need a case number.

a police report is not public information. but you can simply call the jail- not the police station but the jail, and ask. they will give you that information.
