No such ordinance, except for the "body being a temple".... now one could interpolate and say that smoking definitely hurts the body and is obviuous so smoking violating the body is a sin to that which should be offered to God.
I myself was instantly cured of smoking without my knowing because a group of people prayed for me to do so when I didn't know it . All of a sudden, I stopped smoking after15 years and did not know why.... no desire, no withdrawal, the whole bit. Later that week my wife informed me she and a few others started praying for that to happen.... and SO.....
Weirded me out, I tell you....
Don't think you're damned if you do.... but it does ruin one of God's gifts.... your body.

Smoking is a bad habit that pollutes our bodies, which the Bible says are temples of God, but so is overeating, which doesn't get nearly as much criticism among Christians. I'd be a lot more concerned about our overall moral character and conformity to Christ than about specific sins per se. Christians in the U.S. have just as high a divorce rate as non-Christians, but the Bible says that adultery is the only Biblical grounds for divorce. I'd say this guy is technically correct about smoking, but smoking certainly isn't the biggest problem that Christians have that isn't being addressed.

It usually falls under defiling the temple of God (the human body) or some such wording.
Usually more in the fundamentalist groups, as well; more Selective Literalism. But they would never comment to a 350 lb woman wearing spandex that she was sinning in what she was doing to her body. Go figure. The high churches acknowledge smoking is bad for you (but so are other things), and usually ban smoking in buildings on the church complex. Many of the clergy still smoke, but at least most do it openly, and not hiding out and preaching from the pulpit about things like this being "sins".
Some low churches also think going to the cinema, having a drink or two, and lists of other things which are not in the Bible are true SINS!! BEWARE!! Not.

Smoking, consuming alcohol, and taking any substance into your body that is harmful to it, including foods in excess, are against the Word of Wisdom. Our Father in Heaven gave us these mortal bodies not to destroy, but to exercise self control over and to conquer earthly temptations (in addition to many other reasons for being here). We have been and are now commanded by the Lord not to take these things into our bodies ~ You choose to break a commandment, you sin. (D&C 89:8 original purpose of tobacco. Also see Doctrine and Covenants, D&C, 89:19-21).
However, keep reading...!
Keep in mind, this is not one of those rare "you are going straight to hell" kind of sins, but a temporal temptation/addiction that one can choose to overcome and not succumb to. I have seen many people choose to stop their smoking addiction, get healthy and repent. Also, those people that do smoke are never to be made to feel that they cannot attend church meetings because they do not adhere to the Word of Wisdom. Evey single one of us sins; The only difference is that smoking is a sin that is easy for everyone to recognize and point their fingers at. I would say that the vast majority of our sins are ones that other do not see. I would never ever nor have I ever told someone who smokes that they are sinning. This includes 80% of my side of the family. That is just tacky and judgemental, to say the least!

There is a verse in the new testament in which the apostle paul states that a christian's body is like a temple of the lord. Many christians interpret that to mean that anything that harms your body is a sin, since you are basically desecrating a temple.

No smoking is most definitely not a sin. Pauls first draft letter to the Corinthians ended up being a massive spliff after he spilled some red wine on it
Corinth 1:12 " And verily, the papyrus with wine soiled was rolled in the house of Paul and much puff was taken"

Yes of course it is, because, not, only, are you showing disrespect for your own life, but also, for the life and health of others, which would not be showing love for your neighbor would it, and therefore it is a sin
Over ten years ago, Aspen, Colorado, a popular winter resort, prohibited smoking in its restaurants. Since then, nonsmoking sections have become more common in restaurants, the workplace, and other public places. Several years ago, a Californian asked his daughter where the nonsmoking section was in a Virginia restaurant. "Dad," she replied, "this is tobacco country!" By the time of his next visit, half of that restaurant had been reserved for nonsmokers. Recently, he saw no one smoking there.
"Nonsmoking wives have a 35% higher risk of lung cancer if their husbands smoke."
"An estimated 90% of lung cancer cases in men and 79% in women are caused by cigarette smoking."
"For a 2-pack a day smoker who has smoked over 40 years, the lung cancer mortality rate is about 22 times higher than a nonsmoker."
"The best safeguard against lung cancer is never to start to smoke, or to stop immediately."
"There is no such thing as a safe cigarette."
"The use of chewing tobacco or snuff increases risk of cancer of the mouth, larynx, throat, and esophagus and is a highly addictive habit."
"The excess risk of cancer of the cheek and gum may reach nearly fiftyfold among long-term snuff users."
"People who quit smoking, regardless of age, live longer than people who continue to smoke. Smokers who quit before age 50 have half the risk of dying in the next 15 years compared with those who continue to smoke."

actually any thing you do to harm your body is a sin , so overeating is a sin, drinking to much pop is a sin, eating sugar when you are a diabetic, I had a preacher tell me once that if you smoke and it doesn't bother you (you feel guilty about it) then its not a sin, so you have to decide what your sin is not someone else. I just sinned really big, i ate to bags of kettle popcorn.....

To some fundamentalists it is considered a sin since you are harming your personal temple of God. I am not sure about Christian doctrine as it stands today in the US since it is more strict than at anytime in a long while.

Wellllll........ in a sense, yes. Anything that is bad for your health is considered wrong by Christians. Smoking was something they hadn't thought about people doing when the Bible was written. So it isn't specifically a sin, but it is certainly against most Christian principles of honoring the body that God gave us.
