Oscar is a good name for a film award...But Oscar is also a fair name for a dog but it does not have much of a bite. The name must be short and sharp for the dog to respond to it's name. Fred, Rex, Spot and Bob are good examples. Names like Guineveir, Loverboy, Handsome Etc are too long winded for the dog to accept.

Yeah Oscars good...so is Dudley...My list could go on, but if your heart set on Oscar, its a cool name!
My only advice is, you'll probably end up trying to shorten Oscar, especially when training, and Osk hasn't quite got a lot of impact, so you want a name that can be clearly recognised ie with more pronounced letters (T, D, S etc)

Oscar is a great name for a chocolate lab. We are getting a chocolate lab mix and naming him Mason. I really like the name Copper for a chocolate lab too. Give the dogs names you don't want to name your kid later in life. :-p

i dont really think oscar is a chocolate lab name its more of a cat or little dog name. i think something that is also the name of a food is a good lab name. i dont really know why. i think its cause there always hungry. penny would also make a good name for a girl lab.

I think chocolate labs deserve chocolate names. My choc lab growing up was Nestle. I've never met another Nestle. Many Americans name their choc labs Hershey since that's a local company. If you're in the UK/Ireland how about Cadbury? I just adopted a rescue chocolate lab named Reese (for Reese's peanut butter cups, which happens to be my favorite candy bar). But since I might want to use that name for a son some day (who knows), we're thinking of renaming our choc lab to --
Fudge
Rolo (another American candy, with caramel)
Heath (as in heath bar)
Smores
Chip (as in chocolate chip)
Anyway hope that helps. Its your dog so name him/her what you love!

It is up to you. I do not see why your asking here.
People are just going to say " Name him Chocolate", " "Name it Midnight",.. or something else Black or Dark.
If you have your heart set on Oscar, then name him Oscar. Just promise me you won't name a female dog Oscar XD

Oscar is a fine name, but since he's a chocolate lab, why not call him Cocoa?

Oscar would suit a black lab, but i think Rufus would be beter for a chocolate one.Whatever name you choose i hope you have plenty of good years together.

Just call it out load as if he is full grown and run off....
OSCAR OSCARmmm or will you shorten it to OSKY....thats how I test out a name for my animals.
If I find it sounds good at full blast or with a squeaky baby voice when you are loving them to bits then its the one.
I like B names but ending in Y or ie .barnie, brownie, benny, bobby, billy, etc cos it flows easily it can be hard when necessary and you can hide the bloody animal expletives amid your contant calling when he just won't come to you.
