It's sort of an intimate way of reaffirming love and that you're pack leader.

This is simply a greeting. Pack members will often do this. It's quite normal and should not be mistaken for aggression. If it bothers you that she does this? Than this is a pretty easy thing to fix. When ever she does this? Give her a quick bite to the side of the neck with the other hand and in a low tone give her a "No".. It's kinda like the Cesar method. But it does work. When you do this she may just drop to the floor and roll on her side in submission. This is a good thing. She will very quickly learn that this is not an acceptable behavior. Once you have corrected her and she has done what you want of her" ALWAYS give calm praise and pets. This is the positive re-enforcement philosophy. And is a reward for the proper behavior in the dogs mind.

I have a Shepherd mix that does that, she is almost 3. It is like she is putting her teeth on you, but not biting. Strangest thing, doesn't hurt. I just figured she was saying hi, dogs use their mouths for lots of stuff.

Think about it,, the very first thing a puppy does after it is born is look (taste, since they can't see) for something to eat. It is only normal that young dogs explore their world with their mouth.

She is very happy to see you, that's all,I think! My Weimeraner ,Roxanne who is 3&1/2 years old does almost the same thing but she actually nibbles on my hands, not hurting me,just her way of loving me telling me,"Mommy,I'm happy you are home,I missed you!" I LOVE IT AND THINK IT IS SO SWEET. She is truely one of a kind but then they all are, right? My yellow Lab,Maxine who is already 10 runs and gets one of her Babies(we call her stuffed animals babies) that quack, moo, oink, squeak, etc.)and boinks it in me as if to say,"Mommy, goodie you're home now, let's play!"It is a lot of fun getting to know each and every pet you get for a companion to love and cherish.Every day they come up with something new as a pup.Even though potty trainning is a pain in the rump, puppies are more fun than anything else in this world......besides kittens !! Much good luck with your new pup and MANY YEARS OF GOOD HEALTH,LAUGHTER,AND LOVE !!! Very Sincerely,Pam.

Nothing wrong with your pup, but many animal behaviorists suggest to discourage ALL tooth-on-skin contact, to avoid confusion and accidents. I have used this method and it really works. Just mildy reprimand her every time her teeth touch anyone's skin. I have four APBTs, and even playing tug-of-war with a rope, they never even accidentally nip or bite.

That is a very normal greeting activity in the pack. Be very sure your dog understands that it is not acceptable to put enough pressure on your skin to hurt you.

Puppies like to chew and they do so when they are excited.
