I heard you have up to six months, but you need the trucks plate or number, the place it happened (mile marker, or intersection) and the time and date. That way the insurance company will verify the trucks position at the claimed incident, and will reimburse you.

You should have called the police anyway. Here is someone who is breaking the law by driving on a suspended license with no insurance, and you took his word that he would pay for the damage to your car? That's awfully naive. You may not care about the dents, but any repairs to your car will add up very quickly. Also, you need to be aware that if you try and file an insurance claim for the accident, one of the first things they will ask for is the police report. Without one, a lot of insurance companies won't process an accident claim. I hope you got his information, and that he didn't lie about that too. Call the police and file a report of your version of the accident now, then call your insurance company and report the accident. I hope your witnesses don't disappear on you, because without a report made right away, you have basically no way to prove this guy had anything to do with your damages.

I'm just curious, where do you all live? I'm an insurance adjuster for a company that sells automobile insurance exclusively. I have never heard of the requirement to report such an accident to the police, even if you have the plate # of the truck. In fact, if you called the police here where I live they wouldn't even take a report from you. All you need to do is report it to you insurance company and provide them with as much detail as you have. Having said that, if a truck is driving down the freeway and tire shreds causing debris to fly up and hit your vehicle that truck is not liable for your damage (where I live). There was no intent on the trucks part so no negligence can be attributed. No negligence, no fault.

ASAP
any accident needs to be reported now not later. The longer you wait the more bogus it sounds to police and insurance companies. If you wait you loose
