BAGHDAD: AP OCtober 28, 2006 Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said he thought that Iraqi troops, left to their own devices, could re-establish order in Iraq in six months, not the 12 to 18 months that top U.S. commander Gen. William Casey had predicted Tuesday.

I imagine he would not say this if he didn't believe it could be done. Why not either get out or stay completely out of line of fire and let the Iraqis take care of their own. Civil war you say? What could possibly be worse than it is now. AND it would save an unnecessary loss of American troop lives.....

Nouri al-Maliki made some good points in his rebuttal to the president. He needs more weapons, and more aggressive training.

I honestly don't see how we can bring this conflict to an end without stepping up our support logistically and financially.

This is not a skirmish that will go away any time soon. These people (those who hate the west) are hell bent on destroying us. They will never go away if left to their own devices. We have to empower those in the majority who use common sense rather than religious fanaticism to work out this cluster **** of a problem.

Lol yeah right. They said something about how the timeline was for Iraqi forces to take over security through the country within a year or something yet currently out of twenty something regions in Iraq they are only in charge of security in a single one.

If we leave them to their own devices and leave the country will quickly decay into chaos. If we stay a few more years, we'll gain a little bit of time, lose another thousand or so of our servicemen and women and then we can leave and let the country descend into chaos.

I thought that the Iraq military led by Saddam were in charge before the war, so what was the point if you return to that situation

Personally, we should send in another 200k troops and do the job right, once and for all. After 6 months, if the Iraqis can't get their crap together.... we are out of there.

Bush & Rummy f-ucked up by not sending in the needed amount of manpower the first time, now we should do it right.

We should know, better than anyone if we feel they are capable to handle everything on their own. When we first started training them, alot couldn't take it; they were scared and some even ran away. But now, after all our training, they are becoming stronger and stronger and we hope to eventually turn everything over to them. I think if we leave now, before we are 100% sure of their responsibilities, it could have devastating consequences.

"Al-Maliki has repeatedly said he would disband "illegal armed groups" but so far has taken little action."

Maybe you should read the rest of the information before making rash statements....
If Maliki has not made a move to do anything and is all talk we cannot leave!
