YES! There is a FREE program that does exactly what you want. It's MixMeister BPM Analyzer. (BPM = Beats Per Minute)

It works automatically on mp3 files. You just drag the files into the program, it analyzes it (much faster than real time) prints the results and updates the file's ID3 tag with the info. I used it on all my mp3's to group tunes together by tempo.

The program isn't perfect, but it's pretty close. Sometimes it can be fooled by complicated rhythms or tempo changes, but for the most part, I think it will do exactly what you want.

Go to www.mixmeister.com and go to the download section. The BPM Analyzer is at the bottom of the list downloads. They ask for your email address, but I haven't been bugged by spam from them.

It is known as a metronome -- and there are both electronic and manual versions. You can also use an inexpensive keyboard to match tempo by setting an appropriate drum beat and then moving the tempo controller up and down until it stays in synch with the song.

There are software versions as well that work with a sound card, but the principle is the same.

Sample analysis only needs a mic input, and the simple program.
