Has anyone read the Heart Of Darkness by Joseph Conrad?

OKay I'm doing an assigment where i have to compose a short story. I have to analyze what the the character Marlowe is referencing, literally and what is the figurative, or larger realization he is stating.

The quote is " -No, they were not inhuman. Well, you know, that was the worst of it-this suspicion of their not being inhuman. It would come slowly to me."

I just need to see if I'm on the right track as to what i think. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question I appreciate it greatly. And please don't think i'm lazy I just need to decipher this book that's giving me hell. I get it on the larger spectrum, but some things are a lil bit complicated as to when I have to break everything down and analyze it word for word

Thank You, If you want to share some more words you can email me at RenRobe29@aol.com

It was nearly 50 years ago, but I remember writing of a journey into a metaphorical mirror.

I also wrote a paper on conrad that carried the cumbersome title, "Nine blind men can describe an elephant much better than one blind man."

Personally, I love the book. It's dark (ha ha) and weird and it's regarded as a fine piece of existentialist literature (with which I wholeheartedly agree). It's just a solid piece of work, no matter how you look at it. It's short, too, which always surprises me, given how intense it is. I would read this book repeatedly if I owned a copy and never get tired of it.

As Marlowe is going down the river, he's outside of his normal environment, England. He sees the savages who looked and behaved differently than those on the ship. Yet, they had human qualities, this puzzled Marlowe and made him think what is to be human?

Probably the best story I ever read - if I understood it. Wish I could help you.
