Pounds have HUNDREDS of good dogs that will be killed if they aren't adopted!
I suspect that every county has an animal shelter that can be found in the phone book under the county offices.

Try your local classifies. They sometimes have free pets to a good home. Also check your local stores bullitin board. People are always posting ads that way. Also talk to your local animal shelter or ARF which is (Animal Rescue Foundation) they are always looking for good homes to give animals to. Except for the classifies which can be free. Animal shelters when you pay an adopt fee provide free nutering or spading. ARF provides things too. These adgenticies will allow you a chance to give animals a good home. Even if you have to pay a little the reward that you and your pet get will far out weigh the expense and usually it is not as expensive as if you bought a pure bread. Most of them are mixed breeds. Good Luck!!

I would be suspicious of some "free dogs" as their lineage is somewhat suspect. Go to your local "Animal Control" shelter or THE DOG POUND. It may cost a bit but you are saving an unwanted pet that the previous owners could not take care of, or did not want to take care of. Remember that if you get a dog it is a long term relationship. It's like having a child; only in this case they can't talk to you. You have to look to the following: Food, shelter, exercise, health care, unconditional love, long term commitment. But remember you have at least a minimum of ten years to look after them, clean up after them, exercise them, discipline them, and love them. Are you ready for that? Apart from that check your local supermarket as someone usually is giving away "free" puppy's.

Do you have the money to support a dog for the next 12 to 18 years? Food and vet bills? That can get very expensive.
