You measure diagonally across opposite corners of the screen.

you measure from top corner top bottom corner diagonally, 42" is not 42 straight across when buying a TV also remember some TVs the speakers on the side making the 42"TV look even bigger

Get a tape measure, a ruler, anything with measurments on it, well not a thermometer of course, put it right up to the tv ,up and down, and there you go!
