Firefox rocks. It beats IE hands down in every catagory. In security, functionality, speed, reliability. Firefox also offers thousands of extensions. So you can do increadible things with Firefox. On top of that it is very customizable, especially if you get a specific extension designed specially to allow very fine grained customization. If all you want is for it to work then Firefox is awesome there also right out of the box. No tweaking needed. Firefox has built in popup blocking and cookie management. I havn't tried 2.0 yet because I have extensions that do everything 2.0 offers. So I've been able to do all of that for a year or two now. I've been able to do everything IE7 offers for 3 or 4 years now.
In short use IE and be years behind the times and always digging virus and other malware infections out of your system or use Firefox and be current with the times.
Opera is another one you should try. It's a good solid browser. I havn't used the most recent version but many of the features seen in IE and Firefox first appeared in Opera. Tabs for example were in Opera back in version 3. It was a little disconcerting the way Opera implimented them however. Opera was also the first browser I saw a sidebar in. I don't know if it's still shareware. I actually paid for 2 or 3 versions of Opera before switching to Mozilla then Firefox. I would suggest giving it a try. Galleon makes an intersting browser and there might be a windoze version of Safari out. Never hurts to shop around and see what you personally like the best.

Firefox is a nice alternative to IE. Very similar in many ways. I have put many clients on the Firefox path and found that 2 or 3 weeks is all it took to become proficient. Better? That's a half-dozen on one hand, 6 on the other type question. There is less malicious code written for Firefox, but IE is the industry standard and will be compatible with every website in cyberspace. If you're locking up while surfing might I suggest you look at some other security and maintenance basics. Have you checked for spyware/adware/scumware? Spybot S&D or Ad-aware by Lavasoft are your best bets to restore sanity to your online browsing. What about bugs? Have you done a manual update on Norton/McAfee and scanned lately? Windows updates? What about clearing the temporary internet files? An overload of temporary internet files can play games with the cleanest of machines. Convert to Firefox if you're looking for change, but keep in mind that a clean version of IE is strong and stable when the proper measurements are taken. Avoid the overpasses and surf away my friend.

Hi there Y'all - I am using Firefox / mozilla and IEX and Opera and am looking at others. Firefox is the main program I use - every now and then I get a website that uses complete illegal code which IEX is infested with, and I " HAVE TO" use IEX just to see the website.
not often, but every month or two on average...
There are problems in getting plug in to work in Firefox as well, since when you go to the web download, ( in Firefox) and install the application, you find that it installed in Opera and IEX etc. and ignored FireFox !
Other than a few websites that use highly non-standard code, FireFox has been FASTER and more reliable, and easier to use.
The security features are better as well.
You do not have to change or remove anything( IEX ) to get Firefox to work. If you just load the defaults, it is so similar in most aspects that you do not have to learn anything new, but, if you wish to delve deeper, you can customize and change anything you want...
good luck !

That is an excellent question! I'm a little afraid to get away from IE and trying something new. What if it fries my computer? What happens when I don't know how to operate it properly and my systems crashes? As you said, the system you are using is the same as mine and when it works it's a beautiful thing and a lot of fun, but when it acts up it's atrocious. If you get a good answer let me know.

Most certainly download and install the latest Mozilla Firefox browser. The browser has less security holes than IE6 has. It has a pop up blocker.

I would assume you have malware and would encourage you to download MS's new (just came out this week) security app that works along with your AV software to improve security, it's called Windows Defender.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
I also recommend you upgrade to IE7 as it's faster and has better security, but also say give Firefox a chance too. Even if you prefer Firefox, upgrade to IE7 as it fixes many security holes over IE6.
