This may sound a little mean but it REALLY does work. Get a spray bottle and fill it with water. Every time you cat does the undesirable behavior, get him (or her) a quick spray and after a few times, the cat will stop doing it.

I am posting a link to what I found extremely effective. If the cat simply walks on it, it completes a circuit, and the alarm goes off. They don't try it twice. One advantage of what I am posting is that it doesn't chew up battery usage, as electrostatic mats do, and is not terribly expensive, and can be turned off and moved when you are using the couch. If your sofa is the wrong width for that mat, they have electrostatic mats offered on the same site.

Do you have any leather that you could give your cat? you could put it on the floor or the cats favorite chair. I have trained my cats with a squirt bottle. I add a small amount of vinegar to the water. When the cat goes on the sofa - give it a squirt with the water/vinegar (just not in the face).

I don't know why you want to keep him off, but try the clear plastic carpet runners with the little pokies on the bottom. Turn it upside down and lay it on the couch. He will not want to walk on this any more than you would. When you are home it is easy to move so you can enjoy your couch.

you can also try a product called sticky paws--- it's a tape-like strip you put on the furniture (won't hurt the furniture) and deters kitty from climbing up. found at the pet store.
squirt bottle should work, too.
And maybe you could get the kitty her own new "couch" - a bed or something or similiar material just for her -to enjoy the temp.

There are static shock blankets you can buy. You flop out the blanket on the couch and plug it in and when the cat touches it, it receives a small shock. Like running around in socks and zapping your siblings, not harsh, just enough to deter loitering.
Look here: www.drsfosterandsmith.com
They have everything for pets.

Put balloons on the couch. When the cat pops a balloon, it'll be scared and won't sit there any longer. You can also make a loud clapping sound. The balloons are helpful for when your not home.

Try checking with your local store in the pet department. They have sprays in which you can buy to use to keep cats from being in areas which you don't want them. I believe you can also spray it on furniture. Check lable to see where it can and can not be sprayed. Good Luck!! If nothing else call your local vet. and see what they recommend

This worked for me and my husband......go to any pet store and they have these clear, double sided, plastic strips that stick to your furniture (it won't hurt your furniture) and when your cat goes to claw it......their paws get a little stuck (won't hurt your pet) and icky...we have it on our sofa and love seat...after about 3 tries...our cat just stopped trying to get on the couch. By the way, it's very inexpensive.
