I live in Australia and the Murdoch media and conservative politicians are absolutely wetting themselves about this.
First of all, however reprehensible the sheik's comments may have been, he's actually committed no crime. We have the right to speak our minds in Australia and while our freedom of speech protections are not as strident as in the US, the cleric has certainly not broken the law.
Secondly, it is not the job of our Prime Minister John Howard to tell the Sydney Muslim community what to do. He says that not sacking this sheik will result in a backlash against Australian Muslims. What he of course fails to mention is that there is already a backlash against Australian Muslims, in no small part due to the Howard government's policies and statements made by Howard himself.
This is hardly the first time a man in a position of power has said such awful things about rape victims. Debates about this have been going on in Hindu Indian communities for some time and in very Catholic Italy in 1997a judge repreale dthe convistion of a rapist because his victim wore tight jeans. However, because its a Muslim being so obnoxious in this case, the media is going nuts.
As for whether beig banned for three months from preaching fut the crime, its hard to say. I feel that the sheik should be heavily censured but if he is sacked, it would most likely make him more reactionary and possibly force him underground.

What the Bible teaches and what religion teaches are so far apart.False religion teaches myths lies and that God is a cruel God.I serve a loving God the one that Jesus taught us about (1 John 4:8) He that does not love has not come to know God, because God is love.(Jeremiah 7:31) And they have built the high places of To′pheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hin′nom, in order to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart.’There are many theories about hell. The medieval concept was an underworld place where unrepentant sinners suffered intense agony forever. Dante, the famous poet, born in the 13th century, wrote in his work The Eleven Pains of Hell: “There are burning trees upon which are hanged the souls of those who would never go to church in this life, . . . “There is an oven heated, at which stand seven devils who shovel the guilty souls into the furnace. . . . “No rest have the guilty souls.” Michelangelo depicted such a fearsome hell in his painting in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. It was said to have scared the wits out of Pope Paul III, who had commissioned it. Both Calvin and Luther accepted the Catholic idea of hell. Today, the doctrine of hellfire is still upheld. “The chief characteristic of hell,” states the New Catholic Encyclopedia, “is its fire that is unquenchable . . . and everlasting . . . Whatever may be implied by the terms ‘unquenchable fire’ and ‘everlasting fire,’ they should not be explained away as meaningless.” Adds Billy Graham, famous American evangelist: “The teaching of a literal hell is found in the creeds of all the leading churches. . . . God considered hell real enough that He sent his only Son to the world to save men from hell.”These are all false lies the loving God does not torment anyone in a hell fire or any other kind of torment.(Revelation 20:14) And death and Ha′des were hurled into the lake of fire. This means the second death, the lake of fire. Here it is explained clearly the second death.

atreadia,
I am as anti-Muslim as they come. I think that they are Satanic and evil to the core, at least the leadership is. They constantly lie about God, and are bound for hell as much as Adolf Hitler and Sadaam Hussien.
I however must stress to you something of another nature. That any government getting involved with the punishment of any religion's preachers on preaching, is a voilation of Church and State to the extreme, and a violation of Free Speech. I realize that this event did not take place in the USA, but the environment for freedom of religion will decrease quickly if those in the Australian government doesn't quell this current movement of setting itself up against Muslim Clerics. The Muslims have done quite enough to make the whole world sick of them, but if they take the preachers right to speak away from the Muslim Clerics, it can also be taken away from the Christian, or the Hindu, or the Mormon. I am against such government interference.

His punishment should also entail listening for three months to tales of rape victims.
He should hear from the 84 year old grandmother who was raped when someone broke into her house.
He should hear from the parents of the 9 month old who was raped while in child care.
And maybe he should spend sometime in a prison just to see if he is looked upon as 'meat.'

Sorry to say that that's the view of many that practice Islam or at least to some extent. That's the reason women are to be covered, so they will not attract men and cause them to think sinful thoughts that will lead to sinful acts.
As for the punishment, it will not change how he thinks or what he feels. It's his opinion that's greatly influenced by his religion. We're all entitled to our own thoughts, but must be careful at times of our expression of them.
No this punishment does not fit.

Since when does punishment in religion have the crime? Christians believe that their supposedly just and mericful God punishes a life of sin with an eternity of punishment. Is that fair?

I saw the video where he was saying that, jeesh. but he is a man of religion and they do tend to frown on women dressing provacatively.
I don't know this guys regular teachings and don't like to judge someones entire teachings on just one comment they made.
