groomsmen, what is the objective here and how do you advise them in this pose? i just did my first wedding this past weekend, however i wasn't sure what it is that i should have accomplished with these. i know i've seen them and they're normally cute and funny. but how do you direct this ..what do you ask them to do? Please help.

don't pose them too intimately... you never know how those pictures are going to be interpreted by a jealous spouse.

Pictures like this are cute and funny becuse the people in the pictures are cute and want to do something funny. If you have a wedding party whose members have no sense of humor, are bored, don't give a darn, are too serious, etc. then it is pointless to try to make them do something funny. It all depends on the mood of the day and the temperament of the people you are working with. This is why it is necessary for a wedding photographer to be sensitive not only to light, timing, and composition but also to the mood and emotion of the people involved in the wedding. However, to answer your question, I find that by making fun of myself I can make people laught easier than if I ask them to laugh on their own.
