Yes and no

Yes it's an amp just like a home amp. It will drive the sub(s) and take the output from your home stereo.

Now the NO part. It is not very cost effective to build or even buy a power supply for a car amp that can deliver enough current at 12v (actually 14v to 15v). Most 12v power supplies are limited in the amount of current they can deliver, usually about 1amp. You would need a power supply that could deliver more like 20 to 50 amps depending on your amplifier. Retail stores have them for display purposes but that doesn't mean they are cheap, I would guess they would be on the order of $200.

In the end it probably be easier and cheaper just to buy a sub woofer amp. check some of these out, I have used some of them and they work great.

I'm pretty sure you can. If you think about, car-audio stores (even circuit city) have tons of subs wired in doors.

I think you have to get a wire to convert the power source to match the required voltage of a car battery. Also you need a stereo that has RCA output cables.

you have to power it with 12VDC so if you get a converter that will deliver the amperage needed to drive the amplifier you can do it, the only other issue you have is the impedance of the speakers being the same as the amplifier is designed for
