I am involved in lots of remodels. Paint a light color like light blue or yellow. Then if you like cars get a border (wallpaper type, pre-pasted) and add at the top of the room where it meets the roof. This will draw the eye upward and make it larger. Mirrors help make a room larger also but you would have to take them down for a toddler as a toddler throws toys and can break them. For contrast pain the tim and baseboards a snow white. It will make the room look finished off.

Make sure you use semi-gloss paint for the whole room. It costs only pennies per wall more but it is washable and with little ones you need that. You can even add curtains with cars. That would really look cute and great for a boy.

Good Luck

I would have to disagree with those who are recommending border strips....they do have fun themes, but I have always found them to make a room look smaller because they "outline" the borders of the room, so if a room is already small, you notice. Also, I don't like the idea of having a border at the ceiling level because it brings the eye up to the ceiling and if you notice the ceiling, it feels closer, hence it makes the room look smaller. I have actually found that deep colors are really inviting and people seem drawn to rooms painted with strong color. Darker colors do not necessarily make a room feel smaller, so don't hesitate to give it a try. Also, consider painting the ceiling the same color as the walls or a slightly lighter version of the wall color....it can make the walls seem to go on forever. Keep in mind...paint is one of the least expensive ways to completely change the feel of a room, so experimenting is good. Remember to buy a small amount of each color you are considering and paint a large patch of each on the wall and live with it a couple of days to see it if you like it in the evenings as well as the daytime. For decoration, you can always buy a book or a magazine of any topic you think your son might like and then frame individual pages and hang them in the room.

A semi-gloss paint will make the room look larger plus it is easier to clean and resists marks. Check at the paint store for some special paints that are childd proof.

A warm ivory is always good.for a wall color, neutral. As for a theme, cars you mentioned, check out borders in wallpaper books or stencils. A good paint store (sherwin-williams) can be a help. Look at magazines. Also, observe your child, see what he likes. Some themes he might outgrow and if everything is centered on it, it will look outdated.

You could use your walls like a blank canvas that can be changed as your sons grows older and his interests change i.e. with curtains, pictures, or strippable wallpaper borders or decals

Believe it or not, when i bought my house, it was full of dark paneling which i painted light colors....because you could see exactly where the walls ended with the light colors, it actually looks smaller with the light walls....totally reverse of common thought
If you go to lowes or home depot they will have all kinds of books and videos you can buy to give you ideas.

Regardless of the color, i would specifically get a kids room paint which will be a tough paint that is easy to wipe crayon marks off of.

Blue Jean blue color about 3 feet from the floow, and then a lighter blue for the rest of the wall to the ceiling. Where the two blues meet use a wallpaper border (peel off kind so you can change it when he's older) with race cars.

Start with what your son is interested in. Choo Choo Trains, cars, balls, animals. How about a baby blue room with balls trace around a paper plate then color in. Or cut pictures of cars out and get inexpensive frames at the dollar store. There are so many things. Keep it interesting and at his level
