The Overland Campaign, May and June of 1864. It led to the Siege of Petersburg, which marked the beginning of the end of the Confederate war effort. The Battle of Cold Harbor (May 31st-June 12th) was probably the most famous encounter in this campaign.

Gettysburg, July 1863 was the turning point of the war. Grant won an earlier battle in the West that got him appointed under McClellan with full control of the troops.

What allowed Grant to take command was the fall of the Mississippi river at Vicksburg.

What broke the South's back was the March to the sea by General Sherman.
