Positive: #1: They provide a cheap and reliable source of labor for employers. Because the Anglo population in the U.S. is getting older, the U.S. needs more young people to fill the jobs in which the older Americans will depend upon for assistance. #2: They take the jobs that other Americans would not take at the wages offered by the employers. Examples include food processing, farmwork and many of the service industries, such as hotel and motel work.
Negative #1: Because many don't speak English, they are a cultural shock to Americans who feel uncomfortable hearing anything but English. However, usually by the second generation, that has been taken care of. #2: If the government does not enforce the laws of the nation regarding immigration, people start to disrespect the federal government in this and other issues.
Generally speaking, the U.S. needs immigration for the reason cited in positive #1. Just ask Japan what it's going to do in 40 years. It has a falling birth rate and no one immigrates to Japan.

Illegal, that is a VERY serious word. So the first answer to your question is YES! Illegal means that we have to spend huge amounts of tax payer CASH to enforce our immigration laws. Then we have to pay huge sums of CASH to give them benefits. That's the short answer to the negative side of the question (and believe me the list is practically endless).
The positives are that most of them want to work, and they work hard. But, they have no status so they avoid paying taxes, they spread disease, they absorb dollars from the infrastructure, food stamps, wick, etc.
Overall, they are becoming a huge liability, and the reason is this.
The numbers crossing the borders are astronomical campared to 20 or 30 years ago. WE JUST CAN"T AFFORD ILLEGAL IMMIGRTION.
We can afford LEGAL immigration. So lets get our **** together and only allow what we can afford to allow.

Don't believe anyone talking about AMNESTY.
Right now, a person can be convicted of a crime, pay the fine/penalty & be elligible for consideration as a naturalised Amercan - I was (stole $5 from a gas station in 1982 - paid a fine & moved on).
NO politician is suggesting we ignore the offences. Here in Arizona John Kyl, running for re-election to the senate, has had to change his attack ads to say his oppononent (Jim peterson)favours allowing making illegal aliens elligible for citizenship - he was saying AMNESTY. But he had to change the add.
If someone says person x favours amnesty - guranteed, they are LYING.

Things illegal immigrants do.
Run down our wages
Send money to Mexico.
Take advantage of health care
Run hospitals out of business
Commit crimes
Protest against America
Rufus to learn English
Lower our standard of living
The list goes on, some people make claim that they lower costs by providing cheap labor, however there was a report called " How much does that tomato cost ? " that showed that illegal immigration cuts out overhead costs but it only effect the produce farmers, and does not reflect on the consumer.
"How much does that tomato cost ? " was written by the University of Iowa, I don't have a link, but I think it will be a valuable resource for you to read on .
Also I read how NAFTA has contributed to the increase in illegal immigration.

actually they do more harm than good. they set pay scales for worker at a lower rate, cause undue pressure on are health and welfare system, not to mention the crime rate in a mostly illegal neighbor hoods are higher. and if there children get into the schools it also makes for a lowering of the standards, that causes higher grades with lower actual intelligence

Let me re-phrase your question:
"Do people who break the law have either a positive or a negative effect on the US?"
Is the answer apparent now?
