from what i understood, the U.S. need to invade Iraq to bring democracy to its people and they thought that some members of al-qaeda were located in Iraq and that supposely Iraq had WMD but they eventually never found any.

The USA and other western powers supported Saddam Hussein for many years during the 1980s , supplying him with materials for his chemical weapons and military intelligence during the Iraq/Iran war.
At the end of the war Iraq's economy was in a bad way and he needed money from oil exports.
Kuwait increased oil production above the OPEC agreed levels thus depressing the price he could get for his oil.
Saddam then invaded Kuwait in 1990 to stop this and seize the Kuwaiti oil fields.
The Kuwaiti dictatorship fled to Saudi Arabia leaving the Kuwaiti people the their fate.
The USA relies heavily on oil from this region and they feared that if Saddam invaded Saudi Arabia as well he could control the price of oil so they put together a coalition to fight in 1991.
The coalition achieved an easy victory over Saddam's forces and encouraged the Shia muslims in the south of Iraq and the Kurds in the north of Iraq to revolt against Saddam then stood by while he slaughtered them in their thousands.
The decision was taken to leave Saddam in power because Saudi Arabia which is the major ally of the USA in the Gulf feared that he would be replaced by an Islamic Republic as in Iran.
After 9/11 when the USA failed to find and kill Osama bin Laden the american government felt they had to show the world that they were still a mighty military power and started a propaganda campaign against Iraq , the most important part of which was a claim that he had WMD and threatened the whole world.
This was proved wrong after the war and is the main reason why nobody now believes anything that the american government says.

There is a lot of history to read if you really want to have a grasp of the situation. To keep it simple, the Bush administration was concerned that, after 9/11, Saddam Hussein had wmd's that he would sell or give to al-qaeda to cause further attacks in the US. Most of the controversy you hear now regards the information and reasons the Bush administration had for going to war in Iraq.

9/11. If 9/11 had never happened there would not have been an Iraq war.

You might want to read a book called "Fiasco" it gives a lot of very good details about why the US invaded Iraq.

complicated to respond to with out each and all the categorised information that the final inhabitants does no longer have get entry to. i'm no longer a conflict-hawk and no person likes to confirm people being killed. i'm stricken by the Iraqi regime chemically exterminating 20-40,000 harmless people in the late 80's. it is likewise puzzling on condition that Iraq for years does no longer adjust to the U.N. weapons inspectors as a situation of the 1st Gulf conflict. notwithstanding if we've been incorrect to flow in immediately, we did end Hussein's evil dictatorship the place he had harmless people killed. From this viewpoint in step with risk a greater in simple terms government can rule this very stricken u . s .. in the final prognosis, i think of we've been justified in going into Iraq by way of fact the Iraqi's on no account complied with weapons inspectors. what became he hiding?
