If you get a new TV with a digital tuner, you do not need a special receiver. If you have an old TV, you can receive digital TV with a special tuner, but you will not see HDTV unless the TV is "HD Ready"; this means it displays HDTV resolution in wide-screen format. You can stil receive digital TV on an older TV and watch it in "standard" definition format. If you get your TV from cable or satellite, they can provide you with HDTV boxes to receiver their HDTV programs, but again you will only see HD if your set is an HD set, otherwise the picture will be the old-style standard TV.

You will at least need an HDTV antenna. These are, however, inexpensive.
