Evolution is a process whereby the environment "selects" the most well adapted members of a species to survive and reproduce, thereby passing on desirable traits to future generations. Random mutation is the engine behind this. The last evolutionary adaptation that occurred to our line was the development of "big brains." This has eliminated the need for further evolution because human beings are now no longer at the mercy of their environment (on the whole.) We modify our environment to suit our needs. Even if a favorable mutation were to occur, it's unlikely that it would ever be recognized, let alone spread throughout the species.
Evolution by natural selection takes millions and millions of years, and without environmental pressures, there's really no need for it.
What is more likely is that we will start tinkering (if we haven't already) with the human genome to produce "better" versions of ourselves, and man, you don't want to live in this world after that genie gets out of the bottle.
Another possible scenario (one which I prefer) is that we will slowly start to merge human intelligence with computers, first augmenting, and then combining, the two. The technology will get smaller and smaller (eventually elemental) until we can no longer differentiate between our natural parts, and the created ones. The next step will be to escape the limitations of organic life completely, and exist as pure tech. Finally, we'll free ourselves from those last few confining atoms, and merge with the very fabric of the universe at a quantum level, thus returning to where we were born, only now the universe will be intelligent, because we will have become one with it, which is probably the reason for existence to begin with.

as technology increases the human race should evolve larger, longer fingers to easier cope with the manual dexterity needed for use with keyboards etc. as brain capacity increases the head will get bigger.
it has been sugested that if the rise of artifical breeding becomes more widspread and a more accepted form of breeding the human race will develop smaller genitals and that over time reproductive organs might dissapear completley.
pollution, climate change may alter skintone and texture.
these are all suggestions from scientists, but unfortaunatley i cant remember the name of the documentary i watched that had all this information, sure it was a BBC one though.
i thought it interesting that the image of the future human race resembled the popular image of alien lifeforms from 'abductee's' drawings. i dont believe in all that stuff but it's interesting.

I think it is upon us - I think a heightened sense of psychic connectedness and a solid understanding of Unity is all is here. Right now there is an epidemic in our country of autistic kids - what if they are the next step in human evolution? More sensitive to pollutants, more psychic, very intelligent and artistic, but it takes them much longer to develop social skills. I believe there is something to this. 1 in 166 kids in america has some degree of autism they say - and it is popping up strongly in other nations too. Many of our most brilliant people (bill gates, einstein) had a form of autism as children and look how they turned out. There is a new age of enlightenment and discovery heading our way.
Now the question is "is this evolution man made or divine intention?" Are we causing this with mercury and aluminum in our foods and vaccinations or is this a natural evolution that is turning up with these problems?
Peace!

Sean: The "next step" in human evolution is what I call the "ash -age" . That is the age we will all become simply ashes. This will occur because of Nuclear war or simply, Global warming. Take heart though; we can still lean on our ability to acquire knowledge [intellectualism] ! Just think of it ... we will all become a bunch of smart ashes!!!

In terms of evolving it would be a strait back bone and a better suited hip. The top half of you body wishes to walk like an ape but the bottom a bipedal animal. If my theory is correct, If we evolve those two things, This would stop the almost certain development of arthritis in you back.

Everything will be push button, so we won't be needing long arms, it would shrink. We will be always on wheels, our feet will also shrink. There will be great science and technology to learn, thus our brain will get bigger, so is our head. There will be abundance of food, we will grow fatter and round. Our neck will almost be unnoticeable. We will be almost round. Therefore humans will be like the M&M mascot.

I don't think that the next step will be physical change. I believe it will be technological evolution. Brain implants...computer/cellphone/intell-chips.

I think we are regressing because we are not adapting too well to our environments. I would say we are going to keep increasing our tools, technology, until we are able to have robot servants that will serve our needs. But after depending on technology so much, we may lose sight of family values and become disconnect and filled with fear. Thus becoming barbaric again.
Our brains will become smaller and the intellectual world will control the rest of us.

There is no next step. Evolution is a theory, and a false one at that.
