Yes! I had this several times when I was in my late teens-early 20's. I can remember one time very vividly. I was staying at my mom's house, because my husband was in the service. I had a baby that kept me up a lot at night. This particular morning, I heard her open my door to check on us, which she did sometimes so she could take the baby if she was awake, and let me sleep a little longer.
I couldn't move at all! I couldn't open my eyes or say anything. I thought if I tried to really thrash around, she'd see something was wrong, but I couldn't move at all. I heard her close the door and go back downstairs.
It was a very frightening experience! I just lay there, trying to relax, and eventually, I was able to open my eyes and move again. I got up and went down to ask her if she had just been up to check on us, and she said she had about 10 minutes before. So I wasn't dreaming it.
I don't know what it's called. No one else has mentioned it to me. But it is very scary!

Happens to me almost every morning. I wake up paralyzed for 30 minutes to 5 hours. Makes it tough to show up to work on time.
Not deadly, just a major career killer. Keep in mind mine happens every day. I have never met anyone who paralyzes as often as I do waking or sleeping.
I have Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis and Sleep Paralysis is a possible complication.

Yes, I use to experience this quite a bit. Later, I don't know how, I learned to break out of it. I guess at some point I releazied I was still semi conscious and therefore still in control of my mind.
Once when it happend to me, I tried very hard to shake my head left and right - almost as if I was trying to wake myself up and it worked.
When I was younger, it used to happen to me quite frequently. Now that I am older not so much anymore.

During REM sleep the entire body is paralysed. This keeps us from acting out our dreams. If you are aware of this you may be experiencing panic attacks, or night terrors. I myself have experienced this, as the chief way I manifest stress is through sleep disturbences.

Yes, I don't know what the medical or scientific terms is for it, though. I suspect its a case of actually being asleep...
