My 4 1/2 year old descovered that she is afraid of skeletons due to the halloween decorations. She gives a little eeeeek and a shutter then runs away. I'm not sure if she is really afraid or just having fun being afraid (if you know what I mean). Tonight I told her about the skeleton under our skin. Now she keeps looking at her hand- and gives a grossed out look. Should I have not told her that?

No, I think I would tell my little brother the same thing (I'm 14). I doubt your little girl will care tomorrow, and if she does it will be more like trying to scare people by pointing to skeletons and telling them shes really one. She's really just having fun with this, so you should too. However, if shes having trouble sleeping due to the information, you may have a problem. Children's feara are eaily cured with mommys comfort and a silly song (recall "the knee bones conneceted to the leg boe ect...") This is just a phase!!

You did the right thing. Sounds like she's playing a bit with you. Don't shelter them TOO much from everything, or they won't be able to face the world, even the world of a 4 1/2 year old. These are the formative years, it might be at this time she decides to be a doctor.
She's also old enough to know there is serious time, and play time.

I don't think it was mean at all. But if she is still not comfortable about the idea, you might find an illustrated kids' book on the subject and explain it to her with pictures. I'm having Halloween issues with my 4-year-old too. Every store we go to seems to have some scary item that causes him to jump into my arms and insist on being carried well past it with his face buried in my shoulder. I can't wait for Halloween to be over.

Well yes and no. Yes because now she's afraid her skeleton is gonna pop through her skin.
No because this could be a way of helping her not be afraid of skeletons by explaining that without one inside her she'd be just like jello......

Sooner or later she had to find out about the human body. I dont think that she is really freaked out, sounds like she is more curious than anything. Ask her if she has any questions and try to answer them as simple as possible in a language that she can understand.

I think she'll be just fine. I would try not to dwell on the subject too much though. Maybe try to get her mind on something else? Or going the other direction, maybe you could get one of those books for preschoolers about their bodies - it discusses bones, muscles, etc. and is preschool appropriate. I've seen them in several bookstores.

My daughter HATES bugs. I found this out because one day she was in the tub and there was a black piece of lint in the tub. I thought I was teasing her and said, "Oh no, it's a bug." Well, needless to say, she flipped out, climbed up the shower curtain SCREAMING. I had NO idea she felt this way. We can't even say ladybug with out her flipping now. If you knew she was so scared, you should not have done it. Period.

I don't think there was anything wrong with that! It will probably take her a day or two to adjust to the thought, but I am sure that she will be fine.
