You could splint it but it may need to be taken off. Without any treatment it probably will be crooked and may hurt a lot right now. You can give a dog aspirin. Baby ones, depending on weight. But one at least and two if it's a good sized dog. Same thing happened to my dog, she chased my daughter down the road before we could catch her and went in the road. Her tail didn't break but her leg was questionable and I kept her confined for a few days and nursed her back. we were broke at the time. She healed fine, I always pray over my animals and I know that they were healed many times because we didn't have any extra money at that time. Laid off and no jobs. It's better now. Good Luck. You can use flat sticks and medical tape to splint the tail and tape it heavy. dogs will usually chew it off but it's worth a try.
Everyone is getting angry. Sorry. Use some betadine or antiseptic to clean the scrapes and then put ointment on them. If you see swelling, use ice, if he starts running a fever, hot nose, not drinking or vomiting, take him and see. The asperin can be adult does...1 tab. every 4-6 hrs. for the first day, then less often. It could upset his tummy. No Tylenol it is not for dogs. Good luck, I know you care about the dog.

I'd take the dog straight to the vet.
Minor cuts can still get infected and a broken bone is painful (even in the tail). Better to be safe than sorry and there's no reason for the dog to suffer.
The next stop would be a pet store for a stronger leash.

Its probably the obvious answer, but you really need to get him to a vet. He may have internal injuries you arent aware of and besides, a broken tail would be extremely painful. Most vets have payment plans, or will take a post dated check.
Good luck.

yep, best to take the poor guy to the vet, he could have internal injuries too that are not apparent now. At the very least, the vet can set his tail in a cast or splint. Good luck

Strewth, Tim - the competition for most witty & fun-lovin' answer is monstrous stiff here tonight, my friend! Originally my own attempt was to be something that relied for comedy effect on simply going one step more shocking than yourself in the 'disgusting concept' stakes; you know the kind of thing - "Oh, I keep my cat's nipples next to the haemorrhoid ointment in the children's lunchbox, Tim!" But now, having sampled the rapier wit of contributors like OldSchool and Vanessa, well, I think I'd better just stick to awarding thumb-ups to the genius of others. Credit where credit is due, I say!

Take the dog to a Vet. The broken part will not get proper blood flow and die. Gangrene will set in.
