you can't tell...amazon.com had a little gizmo you could buy and put on your phone, but for some reason there took it of the market!

depends on what state you live in...it is illegal to tap a line with out a beeping noise on the recording device in many states. check the law in your state and if you are hearing a faint beep..then you are being recorded...

if it's a government/police or illegal wiretap....you don't.

however, what's not widely known is that everything you say on the phone gets scanned by a computer for keywords...at least they were doing it back in the 70's...why do you think the government gave Bell Labs money to build LongLines?
