he is single, right? no girlfriend of importance. then i say just ask him out, maybe for coffee, or pizza, something informal. at least you would know if he has the same kind of feelings for you or not. if he only thinks of you as a friend it may really shock him, or maybe he has wanted to ask you out too. after a year of wanting to ask him out you should, because time just keeps going by. even if he is not interested in dating, you could still be friends, and you wouldn't be wondering all the time. ask him out!

most importantly DONT COME OFF AS NEEDY AND PATHETIC. first just start off a casual conversation then bring up the semi-formal, sublty. then ask him if he's got a date. If he says no then u ask him if he wants to go wit u.
