What is the protocol for etiquette for dogs that are passing by and whether or not they should sniff. I never let my dog do it, but every once in a while two dogs will be so drawn together that it just has to happen.

Once again. I have left my question at the idiot bus stop. I know why they sniff. I want to know what is the ettiquette if I am walking my dog and we walk past someone else walking their dog. Let them sniff or walk by.

Depends on the other owner. When I'm walking my dog I ask if we can come over and say "hi" to their dog. If they don't look at me, or seem to rush past I don't go near them. I think as long as the dogs aren't going to attack they should be allowed to sniff.

I assume that you are referring to dogs sniffing each other?! Just as humans use their sight to "check out" other humans (especially those of the opposite sex), dogs (this an inherent nature), use their olfactory senses to "look" at other dogs. It is not inappropriate at all for canines to sniff each other and to deter it runs against nature. Obviously, there are some circumstances where at little doggy decorum is in order, but ask any dog owner and they will tell you the same thing. Dogs also sniff humans, cats, the air and lots of other things...it's their way of determining if something is good or not.

When a dog sniffs another dog's butt he/she is downloading and processing a lot of data about the other dog. And when they blow out of their nose they are purging the RAM so that more data may enter.
Just think if we humans sniffed each others butt. It would save a whole lot of useless conversation.

What's in their nature is bound to happen. If people have the finances to train their dogs to not do it, they will probably feel short changed.
