Wow, there are so many great answers, you probably won't even get to mine, but I put a piece of bread in the brown sugar container. This also keeps my cookies and brownies soft. It pulls the moisture from the bread then when the bread gets hard, put in a fresh piece. It sounds weird, I know, but it works.

My grandmother showed me this trick when I was in middle school. If you want to soften up some brown sugar, what you do is break a piece of brown sugar off and put it in a small plastic container. Take a paper towel and run it under the water. Make sure it's really wet. Then you shape it into a ball and put it in the container with the brown sugar and close it up. The moisture in the paper towel will evaporate and the brown sugar will absorb it making it soft. This will only take a day or two to do, depending on how hard the sugar is. To STORE the sugar and keep it soft is simple. Every other week or so, just pound on it a few times. Don't let the sugar crystals stay in the same place and harden. This really is the best way to keep your sugar soft. I've been doing it for years and it has yet to fail me...thanks to good ol' granny. =)

You can keep sugar soft by putting a lice of bread in an air tight container with it.
This will also make already hardened sugar soft.
fyi--this works to restore softness to cookies that have gone hard too

OH, I KNEW THE ANSWER AND I JUST FORGOT. I THINK YOU CAN PUT IT IN THE MICROWAVE FOR JUST A LITTLE TIME DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH YOU HAVE. JUST TRY A LITTLE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

If your box of brown sugar has hardened over time, don't throw it out. Instead place the box in the microwave on high power for about 20 seconds and your brown sugar will be softened.

to deharden brown sugar put it in an air tight container with a slice of bread or apple and it will soften up. If stored in an air tight container it shouldn't harden.

Add a piece of white bread in the container sealed tight with the hardened brown sugar and in a couple of days it should soften.

Put a piece of bread in your brown sugar bag/container and it will soften the hard brown sugar. If you start keeping your brown sugar in an air tight container (like Tupperware or Rubbermaid) then it shouldn't get hard.

Ah, good question. I've asked this before too (no on YA though). Haven't rec'd a good answer yet.

They sell those little Brown Sugar Bears or I've seen Roosters and Maple Leafs (they are made out of natural clay and look like terra cotta) that you soak in water and then put in your in your Brown Sugar to keep it soft. One soaking in water should last a few months and then you soak the clay again. They only cost about $3.00.

I use a zester (kitchen tool) to grate the brown sugar if it gets too hard.

After brown sugar has become hardened, you can put it in the microwave for a few seconds and it will soften.
