I totally enjoyed Bill Bryson's "A Short History Of Nearly Everything".
It explains from the formation of the earth to universe to human DNA to weather to almost everything in understandable layman terms.
You'll feel so much better after reading it, not only because you've gained so much more knowledge, but also comforted that there is a greater Being who made all these possible.
