I've been a teacher in southern California for fourteen years and I've about had it with politics, red tape, credentialing issues, etc... Teaching is no longer fun for me. I'd like to look for a new job/carreer next summer, but I'm not sure what I'm qualified to do. All of my education, up to a master's degree, and work experience are in teaching. I'll miss the vacation time (who wouldn't), but I think my happiness and well being are more important. Any suggestions on where to start? Anyone want to offer me a job?

I just went through this myself. I was extremely unhappy with my job so I looked at local colleges and universities online. Most of the sites had Adult Career Counselling sections. I called one of the universities and started going to career counseling sessions. Many of the schools have master level students working towards psychology degrees who work in this capacity for free and they provide the service under the supervision of a licenced counselor. I went to one and it was really helpful. They provided personality and interest evaluations, then they helped determine which types of professions you are best suited for. They'll also help determine how much, if any additional education is required. If you need or want to return to school, they will help you with the enrollment process and do a transcript evaluation.

Definitely happiness and well being are most important, so give the schools a try!! Good luck...I hope you find what you're looking for!!

Yes, your happiness and well being are more important than a job with the summer off. First of all why did you become a teacher? Is is possible you would be happy being a teacher if you moved to a different state? Or do you just need a sabatical? I think a similiar thing that might be a good career to look into would be a mental health counslor, there are a variety of careers in this area, you can continue to work with children if that is what you like or no kids if you are burnt out or a combination. You could be a school counselor. I would guess you might need some more classes but maybe not. There are other areas that need people who want to help children. Look into different agencies, maybe adoption, of course mostly that would be city, county or state so you might not like the red tape. But think this through, do you have some money set aside to help through any transition? Don't back down, do it because you need to, but don't rush it. Keep both eyes open and look at the good and bad with all careers. Good Luck!

Welcome to the club sister! You are qualified to do a lot actually. Here are some ideas; textbook writer, corporate trainer, teacher trainer (in a credentialing program), or something completely different. Is being a teacher what you always wanted to be, I mean, when you were a little girl is that what you told people you hoped to be? Examine that, because as children we sometimes know exactly what we should do. Go to the library or a career counseling center and see the Occupational Outlook Handbook. It lists all sorts of jobs and the salary with description which might also be helpful to you. Good luck!

Have you considered that many companies, particularly the big ones, have need for trainers? Teaching adults in a business environment is a good deal different, but it is still teaching. They often want people who are good at communicating and teach them what they want taught, so even if you don't know the business, they will tell you what they want their new or transferred people to know and be able to do--while they are teaching you, you will often find it abundantly clear why they want someone else who is experienced in teaching to show it to the new kids on the block.

The YS Librarians are mandatory to the fulfillment of a library equipment. the downside is which you artwork frustrating for the period of the summers with their summer season analyzing classes. this might take in approximately 8 weeks of the summer season from mid-June to early August, although, you would be able to discover which you like travelling interior the autumn or spring besides and is genuinely no longer stricken with the help of the summer season dedication. an acceptable job undertaking is to have a supportive library administration and a help team of assistants to assist with the classes coaching. evaluate it! you would be able to finally end up loving it.

What you need to do first is decide what kind of person you are. Are you a risk taker? Do you enjoy working with people? Are you a leader or a follower? This is crucial to finding the type of work that you will truly enjoy.
I am a risk taker. I volunteer as an Emergency Medical Technician for our local ambulance and thats what makes me happy.
Good Luck in your decision :)

You could look for a position similar to mine - working with children who have behavior problems. Behavior Specialists help children develop appropriate social skills, help families learn to adjust to diagnosed behavior problems, etc.
