Because the vendors (Coke, Pepsi, Big Red ) all pay for their merchandise to be in the stores. Cold shelf space costs more so the companies tend to use cold cases for higher profit, fast grab items such as 20 oz and 1 liters. 2&3 liters are on what is concidered "dry" stock shelves, and generally are cheaper, so the vendors use these areas for larger more expensive items that usually do not sell as fast as the smaller sizes.

Because soda is just sugar water, basically. It doesn't cost that much to make, so the cost has nothing to do with size, and everything to do with convenience, and consumer demand.

Usually you buy 2 L bottles at the grocery store. They aren't very portable, so people only buy it if they want to drink it at home only.

On the other hand, 20 oz bottles are very convenient, and in demand because you can take it anywhere. Also, you can get them at vending machines, and since it's the only cold drink available they can get away with charging at least $1.25, even more at a theme park.

Or it is about the same price. But a person can usually get a 2 Ltr on sale for 99 cents somewhere. Crazy! Too bad it goes flat before a person gets finished with it. I prefer the 6 pks of 24 oz and then I can't get diet Dr Pepper in that.

You're paying for convenience. Sure, a two-liter might be cheaper, but will it fit in your car's cupholder? Would you walk around on the street drinking it? Most people would pay more for a more manageable bottle.

Somebody Mentioned supply and demand.

The smaller bottles are more mobile convenient. Its easier to pick up a 20oz. and be on your way, then buying a 2L and pouring out what you want to drink. They also or more actual serving size portioned better, i mean who really sits and drinks a whole 2L in one sitting. So They are typically in more demand. So the Price is higher.
