I do know exactly what you mean; and it is frustrating. Sometimes I'll ask a question, just to learn what others believe about spiritual or religious matters; no judgement intended, however, someone will give me a "sermon" , tell me how wrong I am, criticize and say I'm stupid for asking, etc...
I just think that if someone can't add something to the question, or give a decent answer, instead of being nasty, why don't they just skip on over to some other question that they can answer???

You sound as though you are a member of my club, the Black Sheep Meadow. You are valuable and threaten others self esteem because deep down they feel you are better than they are. You are entitled to your opinion just like they are.

People are defensive of their religion when they are unsure of it. I try to follow Jesus method of "open palm defense", in other words, the best defense is no defense at all.
Not that sometimes I don't get hugely insulted, but I'm trying!

I don't think that is what they are HOPING for but if that's the way they want to present themselves, especially on the Religion & Spirituality part of Y/A, then that's how people will view them and their religion. If you want to know anything about my religion as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, then please contact me.

If you're asking a question here, you can expect anything. Don't take it personal.

The motivation behind religion is FEAR. People are terrified to ask any questions about religion. When they see your questions, it scares them death. So they attack to shut you up. People who are not afraid, have no religion.
