I think you should use a Live version. That way, you wont have to install the OS. You can insert the disk, boot from the disk and experience Linux. If you like it, you can install the full version. Mandriva(formerly Mandrake) is supposed to be good.

Now a days fedora core 6 is available which is still under development. But you can use fedora core 5. I think that is more user friendly then other flavours of linux. i am using that. From the following link you can download fedora core 5. Its a open source.

i think you should start with suse 10.1 as it is very easy to handle and great graphics i think it is best for the bigginers.
