The mechanical motion of chewing the gum can remove plaque on some surfaces of the teeth. But not all surfaces. In addition Trident can have Xylitol which is a five carbon sugar that actually inhibits decay causing bacteria from physically sticking to the tooth. This type of gum is recommended if you must chew gum. Don't however replace this with routine brushing and flossing, and don't frequently chew gum containing sugar.

Great question! The answer is No! The study everyone quotes about gum cleaning teeth only proves what we have known all along. The participants chewed a piece of xylitol gum at the end of a meal spaced three hours apart and there was no increase in decay. It didn't say that it prevented decay, this just proves what we have known all along. Give three hours between meals so your saliva can kill the bacteria that the food created. It only takes 20 min. for bacteria to have babies and start destroying your teeth so don't cheat, you will only drive the bacteria deeper in your mouth if you try to make up for a bad habit with hygiene. Your saliva is not acidic either it is neutral, if it was acidic it would eat your enamel away. Think of it this way, how can you clean and kill bacteria with food, you can't that's why your mouth will just get drier and your breath will actually get worse. 20/20 did a show on this aspect at the end of last year, I believe in August. Another way to put it is, will this make my teeth last longer? Again the answer is no, how can you use something (your teeth) more often or longer and make them last longer, you can't. Good Luck and don't cheat because the bacteria reproduce so quickly they will always win, luckily their strength is also their weakness, when you only live three to four days anyway, two to three hours is a long time. That's why filtered tap water between your meals will kill them. If I only fed you water, you would die right, it takes you 30 days to die and them 2 to 3 hours. Good Luck Again and Good Health!!!

Trident is a good chewing gum. It does help make my teeth shinier and a bit whiter, if I chew it often...I'm not sure if it necessarily cleans my teeth, though. I've never thought to actually think about that!

Gum encourages the production of saliva. And since saliva is slightly acidic, it can clean some stuff off of your teeth after you eat. I believe this is true for all (sugarless) gum, though, not just Trident. And it's no replacement for actual brushing, of course.

Think of all the gritty stuff you're chewing again and again that's stuck on that piece of gum.

no. haven't you noticed that commercials and ads ALWAYS exaggerate their products to sell more. you should just get your lazy butt up and brush your teeth with some "COLGATE" and swish with listerine.(and floss). gum wont help.
