We recently installed Photosmart essential downloaded from the HP website. Does this include image zone which I think we need in order to scan pictures that are not connected with a digital camera? We're having problems scanning photos from the machine to the computer and assume that it's a software problem. Thanks.

Well there are two things you will need. First you need to have the correct printer drivers installed. Second you need an application to view/edit/print your photos. The driver is what tells the computer how to communicate with your printer. Since this is an All-in-One model, it includes both printing and scanning capability directly in the printer driver. With only the driver, you will be able to scan photos to your computer, store them as files, and/or print them. You may even be able to do some basic editing of those pictures using the built-in abilities of Windows. However, this is not going to give you very much editing capability. That is where the Photosmart software comes in. This should allow you to do some further editing, such as cropping, reduce redeye, resizing, etc. Luckily, HP has a very good website which may help you. I have included the link below. It contains the drivers for download, the software, manuals, faqs, etc. If you're having problems with the driver, please re-post, or you can contact HP support as you are probably under manufacturers warranty, and HP has pretty decent phone support.

you don´t have said the kind of problems. The easiest way is to unplug teh device from the usb port, unplug all other usb devices (except mouse and keyboard) remove the software, restart the computer and reinstall from the cd, after this, reconect the scanner (or wait until the program asks for the mfp connection]), If the problem goes out, reconect the devices one by one retrying the scanning after each. If the problem persists, you must try to install it in another computer before call for warranty.

good luck

If you got an All in One, and I think you did - I have a 3100 All in One. Love it. Has a flatbed scanner on top of the printer and can use as copier and also as a fax. If it is just a photo printer then you need to exchange it for an all purpose machine. You will be happy with it.
