Get a new best friend. People who hurt you in public will at some point hurt you worse in private. Anyone who hurts you whether it's physical, or emotional is not your friend. They have emotional problems and will take it out on you. Don't tolerate this kind of behaviour and stay away from anyone you treats you like this. These are signs of an abuser. Most people recognize it when it's too late. Don't be one of them. Get away from him now.

I'm assuming you're a girl and Tom isn't, right? Well if Tom needs to use his muscles on you when in front of his pals, you don't need to reinforce this dumb "macho" stuff. Take some self-defense classes and defend against anybody - anywhere - anytime from hurting you; it just isn't healthy for any of you.
And besides, if he's that physical in front of people, he's already got your unspoken permission to escalate to something more hurtful when you're alone.
You're worth being treated right and don't you ever forget it.

step back and take an objective look at your situation.
Now imagine that you are your best friend, what advice would you give her? Then take that advice and run with it, you are ultimately your own best friend, only YOU know what is best for you.
I wish you the best of luck. We should never have friends who willingly and knowingly hurt us either mentally, emotionally or physically, in "good" fun or not.

Step away from the situation. I have a question for you? Do you like when he hurts you? If so, there's your answer. If not and you want to be treated like a queen, look for a King. He doesn't value you because you don't value yourself. LOVE YOURSELF FIRST! Good Luck and get counseling for your abuse.
