Hot dogs, also called frankfurters, were first created in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1852. At its heart, a frankfurter is a sausage. Hot dogs are now made by hundreds of companies all across the globe, and each company has its own secret recipe. In general, however, hot dogs contain:
Meat
Meat fat
A "cereal filler" (bread crumbs, oatmeal or flour)
A little egg white
Spices (onion, garlic, salt, pepper, etc.)

My dad works in a meat plant so i went to him for this answer. It's not snouts and unused meat scraps that make the hot dogs. They actually carefully select meat trimmings for the hot dogs. They also add seasonings, cereal fillers such as oatmeal or flour and egg white. Once they grind them together they put them into a synthetic cellulose casing. If you were to make hot dogs at home you would use natural animal intestines.

Most of the time a hot dog is made up of the leftover scraps from meat cuts. (not the fatty parts.) It doesn't mean that it's like hooves and tails and teeth and stuff. There is actual meat in them contrary to popular beliefs. If you're worried about it, try a brand that says "all beef", like, the Vienna brand.

All kinds of stuff, read this;
The standard requires that they be comminuted (reduced to minute particles), semisolid products made from one or more kinds of raw skeletal muscle from livestock (like beef or pork), and may contain poultry meat. Smoking and curing ingredients contribute to flavor, color, and preservation of the product. "Frankfurter, Hot Dog, Wiener, or Bologna With Byproducts" or "With Variety Meats" are made according to the specifications for cooked and/or smoked sausages (see above), except they consist of not less than 15% of one or more kinds of raw skeletal muscle meat with raw meat byproducts. The byproducts (heart, kidney, or liver, for example) must be named with the derived species and be individually named in the ingredients statement.
Try a soy dog. They taste good and don't have near as many ingredients.

They can be made of beef, pork, and turkey are a mixture of all. They are usually made of the leftovers of the animals, unless you buy kosher hotdogs.

I saw a historical reference that said that they were called Hot Dogs because that's probably what was in them.
