I have always wondered that. It would make sense to me if they were called jelly donuts. =)

Don't get me wrong, I respect police officers and the jobs they do. Just from TV shows, it always shows them eating donuts. I thought the pig thing never made sense to me. Thanks for answering!

i know what you're sayin and it bugs me cuz a lot of ppl in my family work with the police and they have been shot and have had friends been killed from guns and stuff. i think they got a piggy name cuz of secruity guards. sitting there and watching a screen for 10 hours straight when usually nothing happens seems kinda boring so ppl made them fall asleep, get fat, and eat a lot and be stupid. it bugs me to death.

If you thought the term pig arose in the 1960s, you're in for a surprise. The OED cites an 1811 reference to a "pig" as a Bow Street Runner--the early police force, named after the location of their headquarters, before Sir Robert Peel and the Metropolitan Police Force (see above.) Before that, the term "pig" had been used as early as the mid-1500s to refer to a person who is heartily disliked.

The usage was probably confined to the criminal classes until the 1960s, when it was taken up by protestors. False explanations for the term involve the gas masks worn by the riot police in that era, or the pigs in charge of George Orwell's Animal Farm.

While police officers usually don't mind being called "cops," they aren't usually fond of the term "pig." A policeman's lot is not an 'appy one.

Starting in August 1968 and for a number of years afterwards, police officers were called pigs by young people, the disenchanted and even the media. This came about when a group who called themselves the Yippies, protested near the 1968 National Democratic Convention in Chicago. They had a small pig as their presidential candidate, and when police disrupted their demonstration, they started to call the police pigs. The expression caught on. Years later, the radical leaders of the Yippies became mainstream and calling police "pigs" drifted into the past.

I'm not sure exactly why they're called that.

I know that the whole donut thing is a little bit of a misconception- however I LOVE DONUTS!!!!! and I'm in a law enforcement class to become a deputy. So as that goes- I like hearing most donut jokes- they're funny.

Cop:Your eyes look a little funny, have you been drinking today sir?
Person: No, but your eyes look glazed, have you been eating a donut???

Its simple really...you see when you are sworn into the force, you are no longer allowed to eat the flesh of a pig. Some sort of strange cult thing.

In any case, when we call them pigs, memories of juicy strips of bacon flash by their eyes and they get quite upset because they know they can no longer eat them. They feel they are being taunted which gets them upset even more.

This is also the real reason why they eat so many donuts. The sugar allows them to relieve the stress.

This is the absolute truth and anyone who disagrees with this is quite frankly lying to you.

Pigs was a derogatory term used by "hippies" in the 60's just to aggravate the police. The cops turned it around by saying that stood for Pride, Integrity & Guts.

In the 1960's, war protesters coined the term as the police officers wore gas masks that made them look like pigs.

It was started in the 60's by the Viet Nam anti-war, hippie protesters. In the 70's the police took it to be their own by making it an acronym.
P= Pride
I = Integrity
G = Guts
S = Service

Too many officers these days walk around with a “John Wayne” attitude. This must be stopped. This is a major problem in our society. Every officer should be subject to a review every six months. For good service, they will be rewarded with money. For bad service, they would be punished with a good old fashioned pink slip.
