depends what kind of pollutants, but their are some microbes that remove some of the pollutants

Bacteria and algae can metabolize a number of things, but yes it depends on what you are considering as pollutants.

Heavy metals and heavily chlorinated hydrocarbons are hard to get rid of, that is why its best not they should be introduced in the first place.

Cattails help clean wastewater in constructed wetlands (natural water treatment plants). there are other flora and fauna that help with this, too.
