Does it endorse the creation of a 'dalit' group? Doesn't that invalidate it completely to a modern reader...

Vedas does NOT teach the seperation of castes. This is a deliberate misinterpretation by vested interests of certain Religions and ignorance of others.Castes names in indian sub-continent are based on profession.
"Kulalebya Karmaarebyascha vo namo,namo---Punjistebyo,nishaadebyascha vo namo,namo"----Veda talks that way--Kulal=Potter--O!the supreme Lord(sriShiva) who is Kulaal(Potter) two salutations(Namo, namo) -at the start and at the end- to You--Karmaar=Blacksmith---Punjista=the hunter who hunts sub- terrerian animals like rabbitss--Nishaadebya=hunter,hunting the birds--Svapathi=hunter of terrestrial animals like deer with the help of dogs-two salutations to each one of them--All castes are seen as the embodiment of Supreme Lord sri.Shiva only--no where in Veda it is mentioned one caste is superior and the other is inferior-now Politicians are interested in maintaining the castes because--all political parties select a person of numerically large caste-so that he/she can win the election and concessions in education-,Government job- are given to the so called inferior caste-because of Vote(election) politics-Politicians will not allow the castes to disappear as long as there is "Democracy?!!" and elections are there.Dr.Ambedkar wanted(in the Constitution of India) reservations for scheduled castes only for 15 years-but thanks to politiciams it continues for 57!! years. It will continue for 5,00,00,00,000 years!!Religion has nothing todo with caste -but Politics profusedly benifits by caste and reservations system-A couple of days back the Supreme Court passed orders that those so called low caste people ,because of Reservations have become "Economically Well of" should give place to their OWN caste people, who are still economically poor- in education and Government Jobs--Nic named as "Creamy Layer"order--there is a hue and cry all over India by Politicians whose children are benifitted to withdraaw this order.!!!! They want Parliament to enect a law to nullfy Supreme Court's order!!!!!!--the worst affected people are only the so called Higher caste people who have all come to USA/England/Germany/Japan in various jobs

No. It describes types of people based on their "action and attribute", people that are suited to certain jobs,(like bulky dudes being soldiers), are ascribed certain roles in society. Brahman and Sudra are not job descriptions. They describe the moral side of people, given to study; Brahman, given to fufilling sense pleasures;Sudra. Nor do the Vedas say either is "right" or "wrong" Now, if you talk to Michael Witzel, or Max Muller,(if you have a time machine), they'll give you a bogus, racist argument, the b.s about sati, and some jibberish about dolichocephalic
skulls precluding the Vedas as authored by native Indians.
There isn't something like "social immobility". The grand majority of Vedic writers were people who would be considered Sudras, but reformed themselves.
