I'm not sure I understand what your friends are telling you. Digital vs film cameras? Digital is getting so much better and the prices so much more reasonable, that it makes sense to switch to digital. Printing costs are much lower, because you only print what you want to print and you don't have to get film developed. You also don't have to wait for processing.

Maybe they're comparing digital zoom and optical zoom on a pocket digital camera. If so, optical zoom is better. It actually zooms the lens, but with digital zoom, it crops the picture down, lowering the resolution.

Basically the question that you need to ask is what is the difference between digital and analog or film cameras.

The optical term in digital refers to optical zoom. The optical zoom on digital camera means through the lens. When you use optical zoom, you don't loose quality but when you use digital zoom then you loose quality. Digital zoom means enlarging the pixels which distorts the image.

The film cameras are still better in terms of quality. but with digital, you can take as many photos and then delete the onces that you don't need.

You can re-use the same memory card over and over again for years. But you have to buy film each time one is full.

Hope this helps.

The difference is in the way they zoom in on the picture. An optical zoom lens actually zooms in on the subject. That's why you see the lens move in and out when you zoom. The digital zoom though only takes an image and digitally enlarges it. I don't really like digital zoom because it's not as clear as optical. So if the camera only comes with one type of zoom, get the optical one. But most cameras have both so you don't have to worry about it that much.

One reason why a person would want to get a digital over a analog (assuming you mean this) is that with a digital camera you can easily transfer the video you shot onto your computer so that you can edit and put it on DVD.

The optical means you have to peep through a view finder while the digital means you can see what your shooting in a screen.
