Did you feel your method for doing so was how most of your peers did it?

I got grants, loans, scholarships, and worked close to full time while in school to do mine. I am reading a book right now about the difficulty kids from a blue-collar background have compared to middle-class kids. I felt that I was definitely in the minority. I worked very hard, physical jobs that also made me think, and I believe it made me a better person. But everyone else seemed to enjoy their college years a lot more than I did.

I got the roughest, toughest jobs I ever had and worked like a dog to earn the money to get in, and then I got jobs on campus beginning in my Sophomore year, and kept going all the way through graduation, and then more private jobs to take me through my first graduate program and again in my second graduate program. I don't know how most of my peers did it, and really don't care. I wanted an education and I wasn't willing to sit around and try to find a handout somewhere like all the welfare recipients in the world. If you want it, go get it, by WORKING for a living. One day you're gonna have to go to work anyway. Ostensibly that's why you're going to college in the first place, so there's no better place to start that working than from the beginning. And you'll be SO MUCH MORE PROUD of your efforts when you graduate under your own power while you watch all those other beggars too whimpy to be responsible enough to work for a living. God Bless you.

Loans, loans, and loans. For some reason my university didn't give me any grants, for which I'm more than eligable, but whatever. I'm the poor kid at my school and I'll have about $150,000 in loans when I graduate. Oh well. On average, the graduates in my major make about $45,000 a year starting out and that isn't bad at all. I'll pay it back, slowly but surely.

Most of my friends at school come from very wealthy backgrounds and their parents pay no problem. A lot of these kids went to prep schools and boarding schools for high school too...and private schools before that. What a huge investment in your child's educations! No wonder the rich get richer and the poor poorer.

Community college for 2 years (paid for with part time jobs) & earned an associates degree. Got a full time job at a university & finished the rest for free (most universities give their employees free access to classes). Never qualified for financial aid, no scholarships, but no loans either.

There are other employers that offer tuition benefits too.

I agree about feeling like I was in the minority--middle class families get nothing. Always thought if I came into alot of money I would create a scholarship for people who fall in this category. Actually was denied a scholarship because I HAD the associates degree. I qualified (was on the dean's list, etc.), but they actually said to my face.....you got this far yourself we feel you will finish & want to give it to someone just starting!

I worked and got student loans. It took me 7 years to pay back $10,000 worth of student loans. Think very carefully before taking on a lot of school loan debt.
